What makes Edina installs different

Edina combines some of the oldest housing in the metro with some of the newest. Four realities shape most jobs here:

• Country Club, Morningside and parts of Highlands are dominated by 1920s–1950s homes — many still on 100A service, and some with detached garages a full driveway apart from the house.
• Tesla density is high. Two-Wall-Connector power-sharing installs are common in Edina households with two EVs.
• Newer construction in Grandview and Cahill typically has 200A service and an empty panel — a straightforward 48A install.
• Landscape and driveway aesthetics matter in Edina. We route conduit and mount chargers to keep the streetscape clean, working with existing hardscape where possible.

Panel capacity in Edina's older homes

Edina was largely built between the 1920s and the 1960s. Country Club and Morningside often still carry 100A service, and a handful have knob-and-tube remnants hidden behind plaster. Highlands and Grandview are mixed — some upgraded to 200A, some on original 150A. The starting point for every Edina job is the load calculation; the panel size shown on the door is not the whole story.

Three outcomes are common on an Edina assessment:

• 200A service → 48A Level 2 charger goes in without a calculation issue.
• 150A service → usually fine for a 40A or 48A charger once the calculation clears.
• 100A service → sometimes a smart load management device solves it, sometimes a 200A upgrade is the right answer.

City permits and detached garage runs

New EV circuits in Edina require an electrical permit through the City of Edina Building Inspections department. We pull the permit, schedule the inspection and meet the inspector on site — you do not file anything.

Morningside and Country Club detached garages add a buried conduit run:

• Circuit run from the house panel to the detached garage — often 30 to 60 feet across driveway or yard.
• Trenching or directional boring to protect the run.
• Sub-panel at the garage if the run is long or the garage already has power.
• Charger mounted on the interior garage wall or exterior wall depending on parking.

Detached-garage runs typically add $600 to $1,800 depending on distance and soil.
