What Level 2 means

Why Level 2 is the
standard for home charging.

There are three charging levels for EVs, and only one of them makes sense for daily home use in Minnesota. Level 1 uses a standard 120V wall outlet and adds three to five miles of range per hour — fine for a plug-in hybrid, painfully slow for a full EV. Level 3 is DC fast charging, which requires commercial infrastructure and is not a home option. Level 2 sits in the practical middle: 240V AC, 32A to 48A, and a full overnight charge every night.

How much does Level 2 EV charger installation cost in Minneapolis or St. Paul?
A standard Level 2 install with a short, accessible run from the panel to the garage typically runs $900 to $1,800 for labor, materials and permit. Longer conduit runs, detached garages with trenching, and panel upgrades add cost. We give you a fixed price after seeing the panel and the parking location.
Do I need a 200A panel for Level 2 charging?
Not automatically. Many homes on 100A service can support a 32A or 40A Level 2 charger once the load calculation is run, especially with a smart load management device. If the panel genuinely cannot carry the load, we quote a 200A upgrade separately.
Is 40A or 48A the better choice?
It depends on your service capacity and your driving. A 48A charger adds up to 40 miles per hour, which refills most EVs in five to eight hours. A 40A charger adds about 30 miles per hour, which is still enough for overnight charging in nearly every case. If your panel supports 48A, it is worth it. If the calculation is tight, 40A is the safer answer.
Can I install Level 2 in a detached garage?
Yes. Detached garages usually require a buried conduit run from the house to the garage, plus a sub-panel at the garage if the run is long. We handle the trenching or directional boring, the conduit, the sub-panel and the charger itself.
Should I hardwire the charger or use a NEMA 14-50 outlet?
Hardwiring is the safer, cleaner option for a permanent installation. It eliminates the plug-in connection point (a common failure and heat point on continuous loads) and lets you use the full amperage of the charger. NEMA 14-50 outlets are useful if you want portability or plan to change chargers later.
How long does a Level 2 installation take?
Most residential Level 2 installations finish in four to eight hours in a single visit. Detached garages that require trenching or jobs that include a panel upgrade may be scheduled across two visits.
Do you handle the permit and inspection?
Yes. New 240V circuits require an electrical permit in Minnesota. We pull the permit with your city, schedule the inspection and meet the inspector on site. You do not file anything yourself.
Can I claim a tax credit for Level 2 installation?
The federal Alternative Fuel Vehicle Refueling Property Credit (30C) has covered a percentage of residential EV charger installation costs, subject to your tax situation and where you live. We provide an itemized invoice you can give to your tax preparer. Confirm eligibility with a tax professional.
